Presently many brewers use silica gel to adsorb proteins and other molecules that reduce the shelf life of bottled beer. This process prevents the phenomenon known to brewers as “chill haze”.

Silica gel powder is added to unfiltered beer and allowed contact time. Proteins and other target molecules become attached to the silica gel through the process of adsorption. The silica gel is then filtered out of the beer with the contaminants attached to the silica gel using diatomaceous earth.

Silica gel is a solid that plugs the diatomaceous earth filter cake during the filtration cycle. This slows the flow rate and reduces the amount of beer that can be filtered in each filter cycle.

The surface of Cynergy® diatomite has been modified by World Minerals using a proprietary process. This allows Cynergy® to adsorb the proteins and other molecules that cause chill haze. This new product eliminates the need for silica gel.
​
Cynergy® diatomite is used in the same way as regular Celite diatomite during the filter cycle. No extra contact time is required as Cynergy® captures the chill haze contaminants in the filter cake during the filter cycle.
